- 1. ContextAs part of the Rehabilitation and integrated sustainable development project of the production landscapes of the Algerian cork oak forest. The project aims to conserve and sustainably manage the ecosystems of the important cork oak forest world in Algeria. This objective will be achieved through the implementation of three components, namely: 1. Piloting the sustainable management, conservation and sustainable use of cork oak forests; 2. Creation of sustainable value from products, goods and services of the cork oak ecosystem; and 3. Replication and scaling of successful approaches. The project will follow a pilot approach, through which three sites representative of diverse ecological and socio-economic contexts will be targeted (for a total of 22,530 ha): national forests of Béni Idder in Jijel, Taourirt Ighil in Béjaïa and Hafir in Tlemcen. On these three sites, sustainable management plans for cork oak forests will be developed as part of a process participatif avec les communautés locales et les parties prenantes, tandis que les chaînes de valeur du liège et d'autres PFNL sélectionnés seront renforcées. Lessons learned from the three pilot sites and capacity building of agents foresters from 24 wilayas will create the conditions for scaling up best practices at the national level, with a view to improving the management and use of cork oak forests across Algeria.
